Helpful Huts
What are helpful huts?
Helpful Huts are structures that will hold personal hygiene items. They will be designed like Little Free Libraries or Pantries, but instead of books or food, Helpful Huts will hold toothbrushes, washcloths, soap, shampoo, feminine hygiene items, and other products that members of the homeless community have told me are needed.
The Story
Helpful Huts came to Chasity as an idea for her Girl Scout Gold Award project after she spoke with several members of her local homeless community. She spent a few hours hearing their stories and asking questions about what they needed and what they did not have access to. She learned that many people donate food and clothes, but most people do not donate hygiene items. They need those to be able to keep themselves clean and, in turn, healthy.
Once she knew the problem, she developed the solution. Thus, Helpful Huts were born. Now, there are two locations in Concord, NC, where people who need these items can obtain them for free. Other people who have extras can donate items to keep the structures stocked.
